Planning a visit to the Dubai Aquarium

The tank, the tunnel and the zoo

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is on the ground floor of The Dubai Mall in Downtown Dubai. Its 10-million-litre tank holds thousands of animals — sand tiger sharks, rays, groupers and shoals of reef fish — behind one of the largest acrylic panels in the world. Part of the tank can be seen for free from the mall; the ticket takes you inside.

Inside, a walk-through tunnel of about 48 metres runs under the tank, with the sharks and rays swimming over and around you. Upstairs, the Underwater Zoo has penguins, otters, a crocodile and the creatures of a rainforest and a rocky shore, with feeding times and keeper talks through the day.

Which ticket to choose

The basic ticket covers the tunnel and the Underwater Zoo. Penguin Cove tickets add the penguin area, and the Explorer tickets add more, such as a glass-bottom boat ride over the tank or a look behind the scenes. Shark dives and cage snorkelling are booked separately and have age and swimming rules.

The Burj Khalifa is in the same mall, so many listings combine the aquarium with At the Top, often with a hotel transfer. Others include transport only. Each listing says which areas and extras are included. The list is ranked by traveller reviews.

Practical tips

The Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station on the Red Line of the metro is linked to the mall by an air-conditioned walkway. The aquarium is open every day from the morning until late in the evening; weekday mornings are the quietest, weekend afternoons the busiest.

One to two hours is enough for the tunnel and the zoo; add an hour for a boat ride or an encounter. With a combo, book the Burj Khalifa slot first and visit the aquarium before or after it — the two entrances are a few minutes' walk apart.
