Where to Watch the New Year's Eve Fireworks in Dubai

At midnight on 31 December, Dubai sets off fireworks in several places at once, and the one on the Burj Khalifa is broadcast around the world. Where you watch from decides the whole night: in the middle of the Downtown crowd, across the water with room to breathe, on a beach, at a gala dinner or from a boat. Here are the main spots, what each is like, and how to get there and back on the busiest night of the year.

The exact list of official displays for the coming night is announced in December. For the season's parties, gala dinners and cruises, see our New Year's Eve in Dubai page.

The Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai

The main show: fireworks launched from the tower itself, with a light show across its facade and the Dubai Fountain below. The best views are from the Dubai Mall waterfront, Burj Park and Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, or from a restaurant or hotel terrace facing the tower — those are booked out weeks ahead and sold as New Year's Eve packages.

Watching from the public streets is free, but the area fills from the afternoon and access is closed once it is full, often long before midnight. Some viewing zones near the tower have been ticketed in recent years. If you go, arrive early, bring water and something to eat, agree on a meeting point (the mobile network struggles at midnight) and expect a long wait to get out afterwards.

Across the water: Business Bay and the Dubai Water Canal

A short distance from the tower, the promenades of Business Bay and the Dubai Water Canal have a clear view of the Burj Khalifa display without the Downtown crush. You lose the closeness of the fountain and the music, but gain space and an easier way home. Hotels and restaurants here with tower views also sell New Year's Eve dinners.

Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis

Fireworks over the crescent of the Palm have been one of the biggest displays outside Downtown, best seen from the beach clubs and hotels on the island or from the water. Most of the good spots here are inside venues with a New Year's Eve ticket; more about the area in Palm Jumeirah.

The Burj Al Arab, JBR and Bluewaters

Along the coast, displays at the Burj Al Arab and at JBR and Bluewaters can be watched from the public beaches — Jumeirah Beach near the Burj Al Arab, The Beach at JBR — which makes them the easiest free option with a sea view. Arrive by early evening for a spot on the sand. Around Dubai Marina the restaurants and rooftop bars sell out first.

Global Village and the Dubai Frame: with children

Midnight in Downtown is hard with small children. Global Village has held several countdowns through the evening in recent years, each with fireworks, to celebrate midnight in other countries — so a family can see a show long before bedtime. The Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park has also had its own display. Check the times announced for the season.

From a boat

The calmest way to see the fireworks is from the water: no crowds, no closed roads, dinner on board and a guaranteed place at midnight. A New Year dinner cruise towards the Burj Khalifa fireworks sails on the Creek side, a New Year cruise with a view of the Burj Al Arab fireworks on the coast, and a group can take a whole yacht for a six-hour New Year's Eve cruise.

New Year cruises board well before midnight and sell out in December. Ordinary evenings on the water are in dhow cruises and yachts and boats.

Getting there and back

  • Roads: the streets around the Burj Khalifa close from the afternoon of 31 December, and the car parks in Downtown fill early. Leave the car at the hotel.
  • Metro: the Dubai Metro usually runs through the night, but the stations next to the Burj Khalifa can close in the evening when the area is full. Plan to use a neighbouring station and walk.
  • Taxis: right after midnight taxis and ride-hailing are scarce and slow. Stay where you are for an hour, or take the metro.

Practical tips

  • Nights at the end of December are mild but breezy by the water; bring a light layer.
  • Alcohol is served only in licensed venues, and drinking in public is not allowed — including on the street on New Year's Eve.
  • Book dinners, parties and cruises in November if you can: the best-placed ones sell out early in December, and many New Year's Eve tickets are non-refundable.
